Design Leadership

I do not believe in design as a collection of disciplines. I believe in design as a transferable way of thinking.

If I can understand the people, systems, constraints, incentives, and language of a domain, I can design in it. Government services, oil field software, drug discovery, and AI products are not unrelated categories, at least to me. They are different expressions of the same problem: making complex systems legible enough for people to act inside them. Every domain adds another pattern to the library. The more unfamiliar the problem, the more valuable that library becomes.

And I don't think complex products should not be made simpler by hiding their complexity. They should be made understandable by giving the complexity a usable shape. In AI, scientific software, infrastructure, and autonomous systems, trust does not come from polished surfaces or confident language. It comes from evidence, comparison, provenance, visible system states, and honest failure handling.

I design for the moments when the system is uncertain, slow, wrong, incomplete, or surprising. Those are not edge cases to be cleaned up later. They are where the product reveals its character. A system that handles failure clearly is more useful than one that performs well only in ideal conditions.

AI makes this distinction more important. Production is becoming cheap. Interfaces, code, research summaries, and visual directions can be generated quickly, often before the team has agreed on what problem it is solving. The scarce skill is no longer making more artifacts. It is knowing which artifacts deserve to exist.

I measure design leadership by the capability it leaves behind. The product should become clearer without becoming simplistic. Teams should make decisions faster because the principles and patterns are visible. Designers should have meaningful ownership and enough context to act independently, and thus turn the company to become better at recognizing the difference of what good design can make.
