LOT to me3 days ago
LOT is doing really amazing, and that’s because of you. We’re so, so excited for its future. It seems that things are finally aligned.
In appreciation of your support from the very beginning, we’ve applied a 30% discount to your account.
As usual, feel free to send your feedback on any item by replying directly to this email (size update, address update, schedule questions, replacements, loose fit vs. true size, concerns and compliments). No specific questions this month; we don’t want to bother you with questionnaires any longer (something much cooler is coming next month).
On a personal note: the last few months weren’t cool for me. Understanding how people work and communicating what is on your mind is so hard. People love dem ideas (even the crazy ones), they share the vision for that future, and they understand the overall plan. However, it’s so hard to make people trust and truly believe. It's hard for me too (especially after those fucking events).
Instead of being able to lose myself in manufacturing hustle, logistics or business decisions, I found myself spending most of the time stressing the most basic thing ever — interaction with other people. And that’s not at all about being able to articulate verbally or in writing what’s on your mind.
I know my intentions are good, I know the ideas are good… but it doesn't work, you know? So, right now, I found myself thinking about my posture, my eye contact, the position of my arms and legs, the tone of my voice... and my mornings. It’s got nothing to do with faking your appearance; rather, making your physical appearance aligned with what you think you are.
Like (sorry), after spending 8 hours on retouching an image in Photoshop, I would spend another 2 hours just to prepare it for the web. I would apply a sharpening filter on a separate layer with 23% transparency by *almost* simultaneously pressing 2 and 3 on the keyboard (a skill I acquired after some practice). Then I would save that image (still in hi-res!) in a separate folder. Finally, I would resize that 1.2 GB (now PNG) image, BUT make sure that sharpening on the smaller PNG has the same 23% glow.
Then Sergey will do all that again — more precisely, more technically — so people on any device, anywhere, at any bandwidth speed will actually see it.
The reason is simple — we want to make sure that people will get the very same vibes from that image as I am getting right now by looking at it on my retina screen, uncompressed, 32 bit, 10k px resolution.
But I won't take that kind of care with my own appearance?
It’s so weird to me because I always believed that it is all about the idea and execution — nothing personal, nothing emotional — and people have to trust, have to believe. And if they didn’t — I added them to the “they don’t get the idea” list.
Giving myself an extra 10 seconds per sentence, an extra 10 minutes per day on setting up that interface (my face, my body, my voice, my mood), turns out to be the key to making the thing work, you know? We’ll see.
BTW, sorry for the rant — but I think it might be relevant. Downloading all that at this point in life feels pretty shitty. After looking so long at why I am losing so hard in everything, I realized that it’s not about my ideas, and it’s not even about my persona. It’s just that I spend all that time on polishing my PNGs, the vision — but not myself.
Turns out, I never learned how to use that one device, that one interface — me :(

Hey Jj — thank you for your kind words! It really helps to know you liked the letter.
We want to try to keep LOT as a closed community — as less public appearance as possible — only for the family!
What you think?
me to Vadik2 days ago
totally understand. i was just imagining the foreseeable future dystopian world where every single human wear like LOT. then there is no place for you to hide. but until then, it makes sense to be email only for closer knit fam. just write more - because email is 90% one way communication, and solely with you. i somtimes wondering how other people think and say too. i also believe people would be much less engage in an email conversation because people probably think you won't reply. maybe a private place we can discuss or LOT slack channel? just my 2cents.

this is very good idea!
do you think we can set-up something like a group chat or a forum? I like Slack, but I think it’s still hard for many people to use it (non-tech people). What else is out there? Ideally it should be something like a private sub-reddit, but on lot2046.com/family or something like that

facebook group would require minimal setup. there of course is a trade off of exposure vs engagement vs relying on facebook.
using facebook will inevitably gain more exposure to outsiders (even if private group), while lot2046.com/fam is more contained but also more distanced. it really depends on how engaging you want the fam to be. i think a hybrid may also be a good idea - lot2046.com/fam for the real discussions to happen AND facebook group for casual talks and lead people back to LOT.

yes, this is cool, thank you!
we will take a look at it — maybe that’s the way to go?
we'll keep you posted on this
please send any ideas as well!
